So it's about 9am, and I haven't eaten today, and I'm going to go to the gym with my friend at 3pm today. Since I'm trying to get rid of any excess belly fat, would it be okay if I went to the gym and exercised without eating beforehand? Or would that be unsafe?
You really should have something to eat if you plan on working out. You'll need energy to accomplish your workout. So have some carbs before you work out.
Actually, not eating for that amount of time will send your body into Exercise Induced Hypoglycemia. This will cause your body to preserve all of it's stored sugar deposits (fat pockets) and use those for survival rather than burning them off as you exercise.

The best way to loose belly fat is a combination of factors. First is to eat something light and full of filling fiber (best choice is an apple, or toast and peanut butter) about 1-2 hours before hand. The first 29 minutes of your workout (approximately, it varies by person and intensity) is essentially for nothing! This is your body using it's glycogen within the muscle stores, after that you start burning fat. The best thing to do is start with your weight training and then finish with cardio, not only does this work better for fat lose, but it is also safer (you are not lifting heavy weights once already tired).

You need to eat for energy! Eat some carbohydrates and you will have a lot more energy when you work out and therefore get a better work out.
Some people can handle it, some people not. I know of people who eat breakfast AFTER the workout which includes a good strenuous cardio and weights. Generally, this will kick in your metabolism, so when you eat after a workout, it burns the calories quicker. I workout at the gym in the evenings - before supper and 30 minutes after the workout, I have my sensible supper. That is, of course, after eating my breakfast, lunch, and mid-afternoon snack first. If you are workout out at 3:00pm, you MUST have your morning breakfast and your normal lunch. It would be counter-productive to skip these meals all day then workout at 3 - you will not lose any weight that way.
You need to east something. If you don't, your body will not have any energy and you will probably pass out if you work to hard.

It's not unsafe, you will be fine working out on an empty stomach. I prefer to train on an empty stomach than eating something just before the gym. A couple of things, however, you should consider:
- If you are drastically reducing calories and not eating regularly, your body will begin to use muscle mass for energy and store as much fat aexercise lose belly fats it can
- The best case is to eat small meals frequently, so your body doesn't go into starvation mode and store excess fat

Still, working out first thing in the morning before eating is not going to have a significant impact on you.
You should always have eaten something before you work out. Not like eat on the way or before you go but make sure you have food in your system so you don't pass out

eat a little bit...if you really want to maximize the impact of your workout:

a) start eating early in the day (right when you get up)
b) eat several small meals a day, rather than fewer big ones
c) don't eat before bed
d) drink large amounts of water throughout the day (for some reason, i remember 8-10 glasses...but that might be off...just alot! lol)

all four aim at starting up you metabolism and keeping it going, instead of doing things in bursts.
Also, gotta push hard in the gym if you want it to work...so how can you do that if you haven't eaten all day?

Not eating sends signals to your body to conserve as many resources as possible...this means "long-term energy"...stored as fat.

One more thing: make sure to work large muscle groups (quads, gluts, etc...), which burn a lot more calories when they are used.
